Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

★ 09/15/2018
While there are numerous excellent guides to world authors, few are as vibrant and enthusiastic as this volume. Here are 110 writers, arranged chronologically, from pre-19th century to the present, with an additional dozen profiled more briefly in each section's directory. Well-known names such as Dante, William Shakespeare, John Milton, Mark Twain, and Emily Dickinson are joined by those less widely acclaimed: Aphra Behn, Natsume Soseki, Lu Xun, and Orhan Pamuk. Each well-crafted essay is embellished with a full-color portrait; boxed notes highlighting the writer's form, style, and historical or political context; photographs and illustrations; a time line of major works; and several key quotes. VERDICT This treasure of a book is an enchanting addition to most public library collections.—Marcia G. Welsh, Dartmouth Coll. Lib., Hanover, NH
