Description: Every physician should own and read this superb reference on the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of skin ulcers. The pathophysiology and dysfunctional clotting problems that can cause such wounds are covered well. I wish that the photographs had been in color instead of black and white. Excellent tables present differential diagnosis for the different causes of skin ulcers, necrosis, petechia, hemorrhagic bullae secondary to DIC, calciphylaxis, vasculopathies, vasulitides, etc.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms contributing to different ulcerations and the presentations. Many of these entities are life threatening and need to be diagnosed quickly so appropriate potentially life saving measures can be instituted. Any physician who is performing hospital consultations or cares for very ill patients will benefit from studying this book.
Audience: The audience is all physicians caring for patients.
Features: About one third of the book is devoted to techniques for enhancing wound healing: how to do compression dressings, debridement, topical growth factor treatments, laser, skin grafts and skin substitutes, etc. I wish there had been more step-by-step photographs of how to apply compression dressings to the legs. I found useful the chapter on nutritional supplements to aid in wound healing with suggested dosages.
Assessment: Overall, this is an extremely well written, encyclopedic book providing comprehensive coverage on virtually all aspects of wound healing. Previous books on wound healing have not mastered the art of presenting the material in a clinically digestible and readable manner, which this does. I highly recommend all physicians read this book. This is a complicated topic and the authors have done a great job.
