Purpose: The purpose is to examine workplace mental health laws in seven countries with the aim to improve Japanese mental health services since Japan still has a high suicide rate. These are worthy objectives that are met through narrative examples from each of the seven countries including Japan.
Audience: The intended audience is occupational health policymakers, academics, and practitioners in labor law and occupational health, human resources, and personnel management, as well as organizational psychologists. The needs of the audience are met. The author is credible due to credentials and publications.
Features: The notion that no global definition of mental health exists sets the stage for a thorough examination of mental health law in the workplace. The book describes the Japanese situation both in growing awareness of mental health issues and in the continued high numbers of suicides. A comparative study of occupational mental health legislation was conducted using seven countries - the U.K., Denmark, France, Germany, the U.S., the Netherlands, and Japan. The areas of analysis were public statutes, civil statutes, and verifiable effects. In the book, in-depth comparisons are made with Japan that illustrate the need for policy changes. Finally, key findings and implications for addressing workplace mental health issues are presented. This section is well written and breaks the mental health policy needs into primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.
Assessment: Many published books exist on mental health and associated laws, but none use a comparative analysis of multiple countries in order to address the growing mental health issues in Japan.
