About the Author

Matthew D. Selekman, MSW, LCSW, is a family therapist and addictions counselor in private practice and Director of Partners for Collaborative Solutions, an international family therapy training and consulting firm in Evanston, Illinois. He is an Approved Supervisor with the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Mr. Selekman served as the invited Henry Maier Practitioner-in-Residence at the School of Social Work of the University of Washington and is a three-time recipient of the Walter S. Rosenberry Award from Children’s Hospital Colorado for his significant contributions to the fields of psychiatry and behavioral sciences. The author of numerous professional articles and seven books, including Working with High-Risk Adolescents and Collaborative Brief Therapy with Children, Mr. Selekman consults worldwide to schools and treatment programs serving adolescents and their families. Since 1985, he has given workshops extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, Southeast Asia, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. Description: In this book, the author shares the wisdom he gained as a long-time practitioner working with high-risk adolescents and their families. His strength-based, solution-focused approach is illustrated through numerous case examples and pre- and post-session reflections.
Purpose: The author's purpose is to provide a new model for working with adolescents and their families, in a collaborative, strength-based systemic approach, inspired by evidence-based practices and his own life-long practical experience in the field. Given that this population is one of the hardest to reach, this is a very welcome addition to the literature on working with adolescents at risk.
Audience: The book is equally helpful to students preparing to become therapists and to beginner and skilled therapists who want to learn how to work with this population. For years the author has been an authority in the field of adolescent and child mental health. He is the author of numerous valuable books and articles and an acclaimed international presenter and trainer, specializing in working with children and adolescents.
Features: The book presents a new integrative model for doing family therapy addressing high-risk adolescents. Based on the systemic tradition and integrating solution-focused and collaborative approaches, the author has developed a model that reaches even beyond the family in tapping resources in the broader community where the adolescents are living and going to school. He encourages therapists to create what he calls "solution-determined collaborative teams" that work together with the families to help adolescents through high-risk situations. The author presents in detail numerous techniques and uses several case examples to demonstrate how they are implemented.
