Nora Roberts was a voracious reader as a child, and she regularly came up with her own stories to tell. She married shortly after graduating from high school and went on to have two boys. During a snowstorm in 1979, she was confined to her house with her small children, and she wrote her first book, Irish Thoroughbred (1981), during that time. Immediately after that debut, she went on to achieve amazing success with dozens of engrossing romance books to her credit. Her works were unlike those of other authors in the genre since they did not center on elegance and wealth, but rather on individuals that elicit the readers’ sympathy.

In 1995, she started writing romance-crime novels published under the pen name J.D. Robb. Her debut work in the genre was Naked in Death released in 1995. She completed as many as a dozen volumes a year at times, and in 2012, she published The Witness, her 200th book. Roberts' books have been translated into more than 25 languages, and they have routinely been at the top of bestseller lists worldwide. By the beginning of the twenty-first century, more than 400 million copies of her works had been printed. There have been a number of adaptations of her books into television movies, including Sanctuary (1997), The Reef (1998), and Midnight Bayou (2001).

Roberts' latest book, Hideaway, is a stand-alone work of fiction. The story revolves around two families and how a single violent incident presented a long-term impact on their lives. While not as grim as some of Roberts' past works, this is not a book for the faint of heart, particularly if you find it tough to read about child abuse.
