Johnny Boyo's skipped out on cooking school, said sayonara to old flame and classmate Citrus, and with horny half-breed Deacon takes off on a intergalactic space trucker gig. But he won't drop his cooking obsession—indeed, deep space turns out to be a stellar source of bizarre ingredients such as vellanian pookapples. And Johnny has the chops to render them delicious, even winning a cook-off against the malevolent Twingo twins. Stokoe (Ork Stain) lards this goulash with hilarious one-offs on drugs, sex, and cookery, including Deacon's priceless crack about the hazards of romancing alien females. His blobby, manga-ish black-and-white art suggests Star Wars' Mos Eisley spaceport with insane mechanical goofiness. The plot about space misadventures, kitchen triumphs, strange substances, and stranger affections is shot through with entertaining weirdness if not profundity or consistent plotting. VERDICT Many of the one-offs would have made strong subplots but alas, flash by like a brief buzz. Yet Johnny's trip is great fun for older teens and adults who like outrageous and picaresque sf. Collects two volumes published in 2007 and 2009.—M.C.
