In this title, Friedewald (Paul Klee: Life and Work; Picasso's Animals) organizes the biographies and photographs of female photographers from around the world, including historically important image makers such as Dorothea Lange (1895–1965) and Margaret Bourke-White (1904–71), as well as contemporary photographers such as Cindy Sherman (b. 1954) and Rineke Dijkstra (b. 1959). Arranged alphabetically, the book presents a broad cross-section of eras (from the 1860s to the present) and genres that include fine art, fashion, and photojournalism. Each artist is introduced with a one-page biography and two or three images that represent her body of work. Most of the photographers are from Europe and North America; however, it's clear that Friedewald tried to incorporate diversity by featuring photographers from South Africa, Japan, Vietnam, India, and Iran. The written profiles are informative and the photographs are beautifully printed, yet, the book limits itself to a rather small field of 55 artists. The narrow sampling, not the approach nor the content, is the work's main shortcoming.
