Windsor, a health sciences reference librarian at Ohio University, here profiles over 200 women from myriad scientific arenas, dating from 200 C.E. to the present. Most entries are for 19th- to mid-20th-century women. Included are Linda Richards, the first trained nurse in the United States; Rebecca Crumpler, the first African American physician; Nobel prize-winning chemist Gertrude Elion; Marie Boivin, a prominent French midwife of the early 19th century; psychoanalyst Karen Horney; and Shirley Tilghman, a molecular biologist working on the Human Genome Project. Though the emphasis is on women who have made a significant impact on medicine, there is a scattering of entries on institutions and social issues, e.g., female genital mutilation and footbinding. Libraries that already own either the Biographical Dictionary of Women Healers: Midwives, Nurses, and Physicians, which includes approximately the same number of entries, or Benjamin F. and Barbara S. Shearer's Notable Women in the Life Sciences: A Biographical Dictionary (to which this reviewer contributed one of the 97 entries) may question the purchase of such a similar book: a number of entries overlap in all three works.
