Dora Kohen is a consultant Psychiatrist and an Honorary Senior Lecturer in East London, where she runs an acute psychiatric service for women, and a mother-and-baby unit.

This is a compilation of various mental health issues and the impact that they have on the female gender. The purpose is to identify pertinent psychiatric topics and offer information to assist with the treatment of women in the mental health system. By having several disciplines supply the writing for each chapter, the editor is hoping to accentuate important data that impact mental health in women. The editor meets the objectives. This book is intended for mental health professionasl who work with the female population in their practice. The editor and contributors area credible authorities on the subjects presented. The first part of the book describes the physiology, sociology, and evolvement of female identity psychologically. The next part is dedicated to specific DSM-IV Axis I diagnoses that include major depression, schizophrenia, and eating disorders. There is also a chapter that goes through the management of pregnancy with a person who has a psychiatric illness. Chapters are written by female professionals who specialize in the given area. The chapters highlight recent literature reviews on each of the subject matters. This book provides comprehensive overviews of some of the individual issues related to women and mental health today. The relevant subject matter in each chapter could be expanded to books on their own. I would recommend the book to all health care professionals. Although I do not believe that this book was intended to be all-inclusive, it could benefit from the addition of the geriatric years of women and their mental health issues.
