Overview

In Book 1 of this sinister trilogy, we meet Sathi, an eighteen year old Indian girl who has lived in the UK for all of her life. Already an adolescent of the atypical variety, her life takes a nose-dive off the cliff of normality on the day of her eighteenth birthday - the fateful day she finds out the truth about her mother's death.

Wolves Within follows Sathi as she undertakes a perilous journey to her foreign mother-land in order to avenge her mother. Amidst the beautiful, hilly landscape of Kerala, south-west India, her murky path twists and turns as she meets the wolves, doves and serpents of the world, all guised under the veil of cordiality.

About the Author

Shivon Sudesh is a young author who wrote and published her first book "Wolves Within" when she was just eighteen years old. Born and brought up in Kerala, India, she moved to London with her family when she was 10 years old. When she first started high school she didn't even know enough English to ask where the toilet was, but just a few years later graduated from King's College, London, with a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature! Now she is studying Medicine at La Sapienza University in Rome, Italy, and has recently published the sequel to "Wolves Within", "Doves in Flight". This is the second book in her Prism of Truth trilogy, and she is currently busy writing the third and final book in the series, "Serpent's Dance".

In this, her debut novel, Shivon Sudesh has really opened my eyes to the beauty and rich culture of Kerala. (I found her guide to the languages of the region invaluable). It is against this backdrop that she tells the story of eighteen year old, London-born Sathi's search for the truth about her mother's death. Sudesh skilfully blends Sathi's exploration of her mother's homeland, elements of self discovery as she builds new relationships in that part of the world, and the historical glimpses into her mother's early life. As she does so, it is easy to forget that the author is herself little older than her main character.

The story develops a very real sense of urgency as Sathi begins to piece together the information she has gleaned, coming to realise that more sinister aspects underly her mother's death than she might ever have imagined. The wolves are there all right and I look forward with anticipation to the next part of the trilogy!

Interesting and gripping tale from a young author who shows a great deal of promise. The hint of the supernatural coupled with intense family drama kept held the attention of the reader and now leaves us waiting anxiously for the next installment.
