Narrator Mia Nichols capably portrays both sides of Declan and Abby’s romance. She explores wolf shifter Declan’s intense protective feelings toward Abby even as he resists claiming her as his mate. Nichols also reveals cougar shifter Abby’s loneliness and longing for a family as well as her tenderness for Declan. Drawing out her words, both in narrative and dialogue, Nichols emphasizes emotions and makes every moment count. During violent encounters with Unified Humanity, an anti-shifter group, Nichols builds fear to equal effect. Her voices for other members of Declan’s command team range from gruff to humorous. In their intimate encounters, Nichols matches Abby and Declan’s passion in tone and intensity. Solid narration helps to sell Kyle’s action-driven paranormal series opener. Kyle’s enjoyable first Shifter Rogues paranormal starts fast and never slows down. Wolf shape-shifter Declan Reed may not be the alpha of his Shifter Operations Command (SHOC) black ops team, but he doesn’t hesitate to take the lead when accountant Abby Carter, a cougar the team’s been monitoring, gets cornered by the secret organization determined to eradicate shifters. His instincts tell him that Abby is vital to their understanding of their rival’s plans; more importantly, his attraction and connection to Abby drive him to protect her at all costs. Orphaned as a child, Abby relished her solitary life, particularly after being fostered in Alaska with seal shifters who literally left her to sink or swim. But being on the run with Declan and joining his team make her realize that pack life may be what she’s been missing. Despite an emphasis on action, Kyle doesn’t sacrifice solid character development, including among other members of SHOC, and the sexual tension between Abby and Declan builds to a satisfying climax. Readers of paranormal romance will look forward to future installments. Agent: Holly Root, Root Literary. (Apr.)
