Brenner (philosophy, Old Dominion U.) seeks to demonstrate the essential intelligibility of Wittgenstein's writings. An introductory essay relates the philosopher's ideas and methods to Parmenides, Aristotle, and other formative figures in the history of Western philosophy. It is followed by essays that discuss how there are various kinds of language use that philosophy needs to look at, an interpretation of the "private language" argument, a clarification of what Wittgenstein said about "the inner life," color and number, God, and philosophy and the yearning for the transcendent.
