Witness for Humanity: A Biography of Clarence E. Pickett
A biography of former American Friends Service Committee Executive Secretary Clarence Pickett.

Clarence Pickett, Quaker farm boy from Kansas and elder statesman of his era, inspired humanitarian service activities: economic and social rebuilding in Appalachia during the Depression; the rescue of refugees from Europe and in the Middle East; the creation of alternative service for pacifists in World War II; and postwar nonconfrontational intergovernmental dialogue. The farm boy never lost his deep faith in God and in his fellow humans, or sense of humor.

Larry Miller's biography inspires us to apply Clarence Pickett's compassionate peacebuilding strategies to the new-old problems of the twenty-first century: demilitarization, economic justice, protection of all life, peaceful relations between states and peoples -- and the need for love and joy.
- Elise Boulding, Professor Emeritus of Sociology, Dartmouth College

Larry Miller has written a biography that matches the man. The integrity and moral challenge of Clarence Pickett's life is reflected in the sensitivity and fullness of the tale in the biography. The life so poignantly recreated here calls readers to develop the courage to continue the tasks in this world today that would enlighten the life of Clarence Pickett. He displayed the courage born of faith to speak truth to power.
