Overview

Love is the trickiest spell of all.
*
Lucinda Caraway loves living in Freya Grove, the mystic seaside town where charms, hexes, and magical beings of all kinds are the norm. She spends her days teaching high school history and her nights reading tea leaves and tending to her conjure garden. It's a good life . . . but she can't stop wishing for more.

Until one night, that wish turns into a spell, and suddenly Lucy can't say no. Not to a public karaoke performance. Not to running a 10K. And, most alarmingly, not to her high school crush, Alexander Dwyer, who needs her help unjinxing his new house-which just happens to be right across the street from hers.

Alex has spent the last ten years traveling the world on adventures Lucy has only ever dreamed of, and he's planning to leave again as soon as his house is safe to sell. But until Lucy can unhex herself, she and Alex are stuck together. And with so much magic in the air, maybe the next spell Lucy casts will be the one that convinces him to stay.

OCTOBER 2022 - AudioFile

Zara Eden and Cary Hite narrate a second-chance romance tinged with magic. After casting a wishing spell, Lucy Caraway can no longer say no to things that intimidate her. Alex Dwyer has returned to town for a birthday dinner and is surprised with an unwanted gift. Eden’s portrayal of Lucy is charming, combining equal parts confidence and awkwardness and instantly rendering her relatable. Similarly, Hite’s portrayal of Alex is warm and engaging, making it easy to see why Lucy is enchanted with him. While both narrators occasionally struggle with differentiating secondary characters, overall their performances are solid and enjoyable, and make the town of Freya Grove a welcoming spot to visit. A cute witchy romance, perfect for the spooky season. K.M.P. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine

Martin’s delightfully imagined debut rom-com introduces modern day witch and teacher Lucy Caraway, who lives a ho-hum life with her sisters in their enchanted seaside hometown of Freya Grove, N.J. As her high school reunion approaches, she’s disheartened to realize she’s got nothing worth noting in her high school alumnae notes. That is, until a drunken wish about all the things she dreams of doing with her life comes true. Suddenly, she is singing karaoke, baking elaborate desserts for the town’s annual bake sale, and has her high school crush, Alex Dwyer, falling at her feet. After 10 years of adventure, merman Alex returns home and finds that his parents have purchased him the house across the street from Lucy’s in a bid to convince him to settle down. However, though Alex has had feelings for Lucy since high school, he has serious doubts as to whether he can promise her a happily-ever-after. Martin’s light touch with the paranormal makes for an irresistible romp, and her charming supernatural characters will easily entice even the most skeptical readers into this magical world. This sparkling outing marks Martin as an author to watch. Agent: Lauren Biekerm, FinePrint Literary. (Sept.)

DEBUT Summer fun and soulmate connection will engage readers in this novel featuring a witch and a merman. History teacher Lucy Caraway may know how to conjure magic spells and read tea leaves, but she hasn't known excitement in her life for quite some time. As she runs into her old crush Alex and a high school reunion looms ahead, she fiercely wishes for more noteworthy endeavors. When vagabond photographer Alex Dwyer's merfolk parents gift him a house he does not want, Lucy's talent for interior design is exactly what he needs to find a potential buyer. Sparks flying with every encounter between them, the romance is enjoyable, although the stakes are low. Not all is resolved, but the Caraway sisters' storylines are compelling and promise more to come. The setting is delightful, and its supernatural aspect is made into the norm with magical whimsy incorporated into the town's daily life, luring tourists instead of remaining hidden. VERDICT A charming paranormal romance that will make readers want to stay and fall in love in Martin's fictional Jersey Shore town and wish alongside its resident witches.—Hazel Ureta
