Wishing on My Father's Star
"A coming-of-age story about a young runner who is just discovering her talent and balancing it with a tumultuous family life. [It] stirred every emotion from anger and despair to hope and triumph. I couldn't stop reading." -- 2012 and 2016 Olympian Kim Conley

Gina Dalton is nine when she discovers the dirt track across from her new home in Archer, Nevada. She knows she's found something special--her own place to run, play, and dream of becoming a track star. Then her father gives her his prize possession, a medal from a long-ago championship. But the gift comes with a burden: that win was the defining moment of his life, a triumph he would never again recapture.

As her father drifts from one impossible quest to another, Gina begins living for the dream he abandoned: to become a world-class distance runner. But is it her dream or his? Are dreams enough? Beautifully rendered against the sunburnt desert pastels in which Gina first ran free, and illuminated with exhilarating running scenes, Wishing on My Father's Star is the poignant tale of a young woman trying to decide which of two futures she wants--a gripping coming-of-age story for anyone who has ever dared test their dreams.

About the Author

The daughter of a wildlife-refuge manager, Holly Hight grew up in remote locations much like the high-desert towns and landscapes she so vividly depicts. She ran cross-country in middle school, but pursued other interests in high school and college. After graduation, she returned to competition, racing (and often winning) everything from road runs and trail races to track meets and a masters national championship, sometimes beating all the guys in the process. In college, she got degrees in criminology and political science and interned for the FBI. She then worked as a congressional staffer before winding up in Ashland, Oregon, where she now writes, runs, enjoys her family, and works in a running store owned by two-time Western States Endurance Run champion, Hal Koerner.

A journalist, essayist, science writer, and short-story writer, Holly has appeared in Running Times, Competitor, Marathon & Beyond, Cosmos, Analog Science Fact & Fiction, and Apex. She has also worked as a professional illustrator (including the cover drawing for this book).
Gina and her story have been an eleven-year labor of love. This is her first novel.
