Overview

Tink and producer Hitmaka broke up in 2023, but it didn't prevent the singer from continuing to record with her primary musical collaborator, who on Winter's Diary 5 is involved with all but one track. Hitmaka typically produces with any number of associates ranging from one partner to a crew of five, so it's not as if the former couple were on their own in a studio pressure cooker. If Tink holds back on these songs, one wouldn't know, as she's typically candid and has always written without getting so specific that the average listener can't relate. "Huh," one of her cleverest songs, scolds a noncommunicative lover who won't confess to cheating. Another standout, "Charged Up," picks up from there with another confrontation that comes across as both stream of consciousness and exacting. The four vocal collaborations are highlighted by the can't-let-go ballad "Songs About U," featuring Summer Walker, and the bouncy "Playa," a meeting with Skilla Baby that could have used a bridge and another chorus. Winter's Diary 5 is a smooth progression from Thanks 4 Nothing, her previous album, and falls in line with the four preceding volumes of her mixtape series. ~ Andy Kellman
