Wind Tunnel Balances
This Handbook helps to design and build any kind of force measurement equipment for the use in a wind tunnel. It is of interest to those who want to build multi-component force measurement sensors for other applications as well. The book describes the basic relations for the design and presents handbook formulas that can be used to perform a primary determination of main dimensions of a specified multi-component force sensor. This Handbook describes material and manufacturing particularities, instrumentation techniques and methods for the compensation of environmental influences. It also discusses calibration problems of multi-component force sensors and methods for the evaluation of the data.

About the Author

Dr.-Ing. Klaus Hufnagel studied Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University Darmstadt completing his degree in 1982. From 1984 to1994 he worked as a research assistant at the Institute of Aerodynamics and Measurement Techniques on the development of balances for cryogenic wind tunnels. In 1994 he achieved his Dr.-Ing. with a dissertation on this topic. From 1995 onward he was head of the wind tunnel facility of TU Darmstadt, continuing the work on wind tunnel balances, calibration machines and evaluation methods. Dr. Hufnagel retired in 2019 with almost 35 years experience in designing wind tunnel balances and calibration machines for wind tunnels all over the world.
