Overview

Devin, Nadia and Marcus are on their way to visit their environmentalist parents who are working to stop a logging company from clear-cutting a remote valley.

When their plane crashes and the pilot is killed, the kids are left to survive in the wild with Wiley, a government bureaucrat, who is the only other passenger on the plane. Learning to build a shelter and make a fire in the woods, they discover that Wiley is working with the logging company and will do anything to stop the secret from getting out. On the run and in mortal danger, the three must outrun Wiley, escape a raging forest fire and outwit a hungry grizzly bear to make it to safety.

About the Author

Liam O'Donnell is an author and educator who has created over forty books and graphic novels for young readers, including the Max Finder Mystery, Graphic Guide Adventure and West Meadows Detectives series. He was born in Northern Ireland and came to Canada when he was five years old. He studied media at Ryerson University and has worked on film sets in Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom. Liam lives in London, Ontario.

Mike Deas is an author/illustrator of graphic novels, including Dalen and Gole and the Graphic Guide Adventures series. While he grew up with a love of illustrative storytelling, Capilano College's Commercial Animation Program helped Mike fine-tune his drawing skills and imagination. Mike and his family live on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia.

Gr 3-6 -Three kids rely on wilderness survival skills after their plane crashes en route to Devon and Nadia's mother's environmental assessment site. When the trio discovers that the man accompanying them, a seemingly harmless government pencil pusher dispatched to oversee the project, is in fact in cahoots with a major logging company, they suddenly find their lives in even greater danger. The once-friendly bureaucrat, full of helpful tidbits on building a cozy campsite and the essentials of a trusty first-aid kit, turns into a menacing, greedy criminal capable of murder. Although the improbability of this sudden and extreme change weakens the plot, the book distinguishes itself by interweaving interesting step-by-step instructions for surviving, such as how to tend to a broken arm, cross a strong current, and signal a plane. These tips are delivered with minimal clunkiness. The crisp art creates distinct, full-bodied characters.
