Overview

Akuluk is not excited about visiting her grandparents in Nunavut. She would rather head south for summer vacation, somewhere with roller coasters and cotton candy. There can't be much to do way up there, Akuluk figures. But as soon as she steps off the plane and sees all the exciting animals that the tundra has to offer, Akuluk forgets all about her dreams of going south. On her first full day in Nunavut, she can't wait to travel out on the land with her grandfather to hunt for wild eggs.

As she learns about the different types of eggs, how to collect them properly, and the delicious meals that can be prepared with them, Akuluk knows that this is just the beginning of the exciting things she'll learn about the Arctic.

About the Author

Suzie Napayok-Short was born in Iqaluit on Baffin Island, Nunavut. She has built a career as an Inuktitut translator and interpreter working across Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, and throughout Canada. Suzie currently lives in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Suzie’s first book for children, Wild Eggs: A Tale of Arctic Egg Collecting, was nominated for the Silver Birch Express Award.

Jonathan Wright is an illustrator living in Iqaluit, Nunavut. He’s also known to dabble in the Dark Arts of animation.

Gr 1–4—In this tale, Akuluk, a young girl from the Northwest Territories, is hoping to visit her cousin in Montreal, where there are amusement parks, but instead finds even more interesting adventures in the North with her Inuit grandparents in Nunavut, as she sees Arctic animals and finds the proper way to hunt for wild eggs. The story is overly long for a group read—it is better shared either in chunks or one-on-one. The stylized, animated cartoon-style paintings appear to be done in watercolor and capture the landscape nicely. VERDICT This is quite long and will be problematic as a read-aloud. Still, it fills a void of materials about this culture and will be a welcome addition for most collections.—Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJ

What young Akuluk expects to be a dull visit with her grandparents in Nunavut turns out to be an immersive experience in Piusuituqait, or "the traditional ways." Hardly has she stepped off the plane from Yellowknife than Akuluk's mood changes from regret to delight at seeing big Arctic hares by the roadside on the way to a warm welcome from her Anaana and Ataata. Next morning, dressed in a new atigi (fur parka), she ventures out with both to ride an ATV over rolling hills of aqpiit (cloudberries) to the sea. There, following her grandpa's instructions, she helps to select and gather eggs of mitiq (eider ducks) from a nesting site. Then on her return she finds on her chair an amauti, a woman's parka with a pouch for carrying babies (or, in her case, her stuffed polar bear Piulua), and falls asleep to dream of speckled eggs and future visits. Wright's soft-focus illustrations usually center on the round, smiling faces of Akuluk and her family, but background details of dress and the subarctic landscape add atmospheric notes to the episode. The Inuktitut words threaded through the narrative are defined both in context and in more detail at the end. Its focus on an Inuit protagonist who lives south of the tundra and has relatives in Montréal is a valuable reminder to all readers that indigenous peoples are not confined to their traditional territories. A purposeful but nonetheless evocative glimpse of rural Inuit life inspired by memories of egg gathering in the author's youth. (Picture book. 6-8)
