Narrator Arielle DeLisle’s sweet performance fits this romance story. With a soft voice, she portrays Danielle “Dani” Jones, a young woman who hires out as a cook for a Minnesota logging camp so she can earn enough money to meet her fiancé in California. Once at the camp, she finds she hasn’t planned on the attraction she feels for her boss, “Big John.” DeLisle’s thin voice is stretched portraying Big John’s supposedly booming one, but it works. The many other entertaining characters are all well portrayed by DeLisle. Listeners will learn many interesting aspects of logging life in the late 1800s and enjoy the descriptions of Dani’s wonderful cooking. M.M.G. © AudioFile 2013, Portland, Maine
