Trent didn’t make mistakes. At least he didn’t make gigantically huge, fuck-up-your-life kind of mistakes. It had taken him almost all day to get back to the office. Flight delays and city traffic had all seemed to be working against him, but from the moment he got back from the Hamptons, his life had started unraveling and he couldn’t seem to hang on to all the strings.

“The media have been calling all day,” Ellie said as she poured him a coffee. “Like, the legit media.”

Ellie had been with him for the past few years, pulling all-nighters so that he could pack the punch he needed to impress the higher-ups. She was as driven as he was, set on finishing her business degree. He helped her as much as he could, building a bond that would ensure her loyalty. It was something he’d learned was vitally important in the marketing biz. She’d helped him hit a home run on the last campaign, the one that had given his name meaning—the one that had filled his bank account, and hers too, though to a lesser degree. His value at the company had doubled. No, tripled. And now…this. He couldn’t help but feel like he’d let her down too.

A copy of the tabloid that had published the scandalous photos was on Trent’s desk. He picked it up and flipped through the two-page spread. “It’s bad enough that they got these.”

“Roy had a visit from some police this morning.” Ellie’s tone was hushed.

“Jesus,” Trent breathed, dropping the paper then sweeping it off his desk with another curse. Roy’s contacts at NYPD wouldn’t be too happy that one of his employees had been caught with Sabine Cowan. From what Trent knew, Sabine had been slipping and sliding out of the PD’s grasp for her entire life—if not with rumored payoffs from her father when she was into a lot of illegal shit as a teenager, then her more sophisticated brand of evasion that she somehow managed to wield as an adult and entrepreneur. Everyone knew that what she did with Cowan Enterprises trespassed into criminal behavior. It was just that no one could actually prove it.

“How did this happen?” Ellie asked, her expression concerned.

“I was—” He gulped back a confession, wanting so badly to admit how stupid he had been. He knew Ellie wouldn’t judge him. At least, he hoped she wouldn’t. But he couldn’t form those words, so instead he said, “I got distracted. I went to get Sab… Ms. Cowan’s signature on the paperwork last night and I got caught up in the party.”

“Were you drinking?” Ellie took a seat across from him.
