About the Author

Entrepreneur, visionary, collaborator, communicator, critical thinker, and a leader’s leader- just a few of the adjectives that have been used to describe Dr. joyce gillie gossom. With more than 35 years of professional experience in business and academics, joyce discovered her passion and purpose as a child – making a difference.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, joyce has spent her life going against the grain. At the age of 16, she felt so connected to the poetry and style of e.e. cummings that her mother let joyce legally change her name to all lower case letters, which is frequently met with resistance.

Passionate about education, joyce began her career as a teacher. She later obtained her masters in adult education and supervision and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction. She has developed curriculum and taught at higher education institutions and been an administrator in an Associate Dean capacity.

She honed corporate business and entrepreneurial skills while managing leadership training and strategic planning. She has provided organizational and needs assessment consulting services to bring diverse groups and communities together to solve organizational challenges. Graduates from her leadership development program went on to become elected government officials, major metropolitan school district superintendents and state college presidents.

Currently, joyce serves as Executive Director for the National Association of Branch Campus Administrators and as a principal with Best Gurl inc, the unique, multi-platform company committed to all forms of effective communication she operates with her husband. A highly sought out public speaker, joyce delivers powerful messages to businesses and associations.

Inspired by a small number of known and mostly unknown history makers, joyce strives to achieve, not by living up to the expectations of others, but by setting her own standards. A good description for her is the saying, “The one who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd; those who walk alone are likely to find themselves in places no one has ever been before.”

joyce and her husband have lived in Fort Walton Beach, Florida since 1999. She likes butterflies, the colors purple and yellow, Winnie the Pooh, and large bodies of water. You can reach her at BestGurl.com.
