Overview

"Why a Fly" was written for parents to read to their children once the 'whys' begin, and never seem to end. Valerie Johns, a family therapist for over 20 years, uses mindfulness and the Buddhist concept of the koan to help children see that sometimes it is best to be with the process of asking the questions rather than getting the answer.
Valerie's illustrations are colorful and non-specific to age and gender so children can make up their own associations to the pictures. There is quiet meditation time built into the book, to sit and wonder together.

"After spending a week with a five year old at the shore, I found this book to be the perfect thing to let a child know that they are not the only ones asking the question, "Why?" Creatively written and comical, these simple pages will satisfy even the most curious of young minds. I highly recommend it." ~ Robert W. Williams, Author.

About the Author

Valerie S. Johns is a psychotherapist practicing in Hermosa Beach, California. She started writing at the age of seven, when her teacher Mrs. Best set her poetry to music for the class to sing.
A spoken word artist, her work appeared in Poetry/LA, onthebus and other journals. She was the Poet-in-Residence at Pacific Palisades Elementary School while attending graduate school and working in her clinical internship. Valerie has spent the past 25 years helping children and adults to find their honest, inner voices - creatively and therapeutically.

Valerie’s first book, “What I Heard & What You Said,” introduced readers to Chibi (“little one” in Japanese). Since Chibi’s inception, Valerie has designed a line of jewelry featuring both Chibi and Jizo, a revered Buddhist teacher known as the protector of women, children and travelers. They can be found, along with art, statues and other stuff at www.jizoandchibi.com.

Valerie lives in Los Angeles with her husband, two dogs and her horse.
