About the Author

Lynette Evans has written many books for children. She’s pretty nosy, so she loves finding clues and solving mysteries. She also loves surprises, so she had a lot of fun writing Whose Nest? Where Lynette lives in New Zealand, soaring seabirds called gannets build nests out of scraps of seaweed on the windswept cliffs above the wild Tasman Sea. Lynette likes to live life on the edge now and then, but she’s glad she’s not a gannet chick! She lives in Auckland, New Zealand.

Guy Troughton painted his first bird at four years of age and hasn’t stopped since. After completing a zoology degree in London, Guy began to illustrate and paint full-time. Renowned for his exquisite watercolors, Guy’s award-winning work has been published in countless natural history publications and his beautiful wildlife paintings are held in collections around the world. When Guy is not in his studio painting, he is busy teaching and sharing his love of art. Born in Surrey, England, Guy now lives in Sydney, Australia, with his wife Ellie and their sons John and Max.

PreS-Gr 2—This deceptively simple book challenges children's mental models about what a nest is right off the bat: the first nest belongs to a dormouse. Others belong to an eagle, a tree frog, a clownfish, a rabbit, a bumblebee, a gecko, and a hummingbird. Clues, in straightforward yet lyrical language, invite readers to guess which animal lives in the nest pictured on the right-hand side of each spread. Lifting the flap reveals the creature, with a few more facts about its relationship to its habitat. Troughton's lovely, detailed watercolors show each nest in its natural environment; both text and illustrations pulse with the wonder of the natural world. Birds aren't the only nest builders hiding beneath these scallop-edged gatefolds. Cochrane poses clues to answer the titular question in alliterative riddles that, clumsily, all end with a pair of questions: "Who am I?" and "Whose nest?" The questions have the same answer, which are given, as are the riddles themselves, in each animal's first-person voice. Parting the double flaps on each recto reveals one of eight accurately rendered animals, ranging from an eagle and a hummingbird to a gecko, a clownfish and a bumblebee. Troughton creates idyllic, soft-focus, close-up nature scenes within which he tucks a glimpse of leg, tail or other visual clue for sharp-eyed young viewers to spot. On the other hand, he ignores both the tree frog's "I climb up tree trunks and perch on lofty boughs," and the bumblebee's "I tunnel in the deep, dark earth," depicting the frog at ground level in a wetland setting and bees' nests lying on the surface. Moreover, children on this side of the pond aren't likely to encounter a dormouse (though it is pretty cute). Pretty to look at, but a thin and iffy helping of natural history.
