Overview

When a little turtle comes across a lost hat, he is determined to find its owner. He asks Mouse, and Rabbit, and even Crocodile if it belongs to them, but they all say it isn't theirs. Whose hat can it be?

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal

PreS-K-A hurricanelike wind leaves a pink chapeau ownerless, and a concerned turtle searches for its wearer at the houses of friends Mouse, Rabbit, Beaver, Crocodile, and Elephant. Full-spread illustrations in watercolor with pen and ink offer a faithful depiction of Turtle's tireless search. Repetition of the question, "Is it your hat?," and a steady stream of "It is not mine" responses encourage sight recognition of words as the text progresses to the announcement of the owner's identity. While the predictable plot lacks excitement, and readers might guess the owner by the hat's size, the story provides a comfortable ending for younger children.-Mary Elam, Forman Elementary School, Plano, TX Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

Kirkus Reviews

Using just 85 words to go with delicate, woodsy scenes defined by washes of greens and yellows behind lots of short, fine pen strokes, Gorbachev sends a very small turtle on a quest to return a very large, windblown pink hat to its rightful owner. Even newly emergent readers will be comfortable with the time-honored question-and-answer structure, as well as the mild silliness here. After Turtle asks three obviously unsuitable candidates-a mouse, a crocodile, and a beaver-if the hat is theirs, its true owner, Elephant, gratefully reclaims it. "You are welcome!" Turtle shouts happily to close the episode off. A simple, repetitive pleaser for young children who find the Berenstains' primers a bit too frenetic. (Easy reader. 4-6)
