A child imagines all of the places her ginger kitten might explore in search of a good spot to snooze. The cows are not ready to retire, the chickens are too noisy, and the vegetable patch is full of bunnies. From the bright blue day outdoors, the kitten wanders inside the house to find a spot and settles at the feet of "best friend," a pajama-clad human. The end page shows the farm at night. The colorful, realistic pictures are large enough for group sharing, and children will likely enjoy the sweet kitten. The rhymed text is simple enough for beginning readers, with a repetitive phrase that makes for vocabulary building. A mediocre outing reflects one feline's lengthy search for the perfect spot to sleep. In rhyming couplets, one possible resting place after another is discarded. "I could sleep in the vegetable patch / but I'd be looking for bunnies to catch. / I could sleep with the chicken flock / but they stay up late and talk, talk, talk." Even indoors the pudgy, unapologetically cute kitten finds that perfect spots are elusive-some already taken, others too small. But of course, in the end, readers will agree that the little cat found just the right place to sleep after all. While the trim is a modest nine-by-nine, the huge close-up illustrations still make this a good choice for sharing with a group. Indeed, the artwork is better viewed from afar, since up close some edges appear fuzzy and indistinct. An extra purchase for libraries with a large population of cat lovers. (Picture book. 3-5)
