Carolyn Stahl Bohler is co-Pastor of Redlands First United Methodist Church in Redlands, California. She was Emma Sanborn Toussant Professor of Pastoral Theology and Counseling at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio for twenty-one years.

The book uses a wide variety of examples from everyday life and occasionally from the Bible and from religious heroes such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Basic concern about human dignity makes this book useful to almost anyone who needs awareness of or skill in assertive (nonaggressive, nonpassive) communication.
