Since the last war ended, pilot Ernie Hawker, Jr, has worked transporting people and cargo--a far cry from his old life. When his ship gets thrown off course by an EMP blast, he crash-lands on a rogue world filled with mages, mad machines, and idealistic heroes. A world Ernie remembers quite differently.
He soon discovers he's wanted for the crime of desertion: an act of rebellion he fondly remembers committing. Whoever turns him in will get their freedom off this sand heap of a planet that Ernie once called home, which is a prospect that can turn a lot of heads. At one time, Ernie did a lot of good on this planet, but now it seems it was all for naught. The enemy he thought he had destroyed is alive and has taken an old friend hostage.
They want to escape the planet, and they have two ways to do it: with Ernie's help, or with his bounty. If he wants to get off his planet alive, Ernie is going to have to go down a path he thought he'd left behind. The person known as Eanruig "Ernie" Hawker, Jr. is a lie; the truth is far more dangerous.
