About the Author

Jürgen Vsych (pronounced Yurgen VY-zick) made her first film at age 5. It was shot on Super-8 and edited with her father’s toenail clippers. She grew up in Hollywood but never went Hollywood, apprenticing as a director at The Old Globe, BBC-Scotland, The Old Vic and Scottish Opera, and won the Prince Charles Trust Award for her short film, Pay Your Rent, Beethoven. Her films have aired on PBS, Channel Four in the UK, and at 41 film festivals in 28 countries. Her 35mm feature début was the cult hit Ophelia Learns to Swim. She is the author of The Woman Director, the first autobiography of an American female film director, and Captain Death, a historical novel about piracy in the early days of the American Revolution. She sails the seven seas and the Potomac, Mississippi, Hudson and Delaware.? Before the 2004 campaign and for four years afterwards, in her other life as “The Lady Piper,” Vsych was one of the world’s few female professional bagpipers, regularly performing for scatterings at sea in the San Francisco Bay and at Arlington National Cemetery. She attended more funerals for soldiers killed in Iraq than the entire Bush Administration.
