About the Author

Emi Zako was born in 1965 and raised in Japan. She grew up without her biological father due to a fatal car accident, which led to future financial difficulties in her young adult life. Instead of attending college after graduating from Oki Gakuen High School in Fukuoka, Japan, she became a computer programmer and from there continued on to work several varieties of jobs.

In 1997, she met her husband on a vacation in America, and got married in 1998. Emi raised their two daughters and eventually decided to pursue one of her dreams-attending college-in 2010. In 2015, she graduated from community college with Psychology and Social Behavior Science Associates Degrees. In 2017, she continued on to earn a Bachelors Degree in Early Childhood Development. During her time in college, she learned that she really enjoyed studying Children's Literature.

The COVID-19 outbreak proved to be a blessing in disguise for Emi, and she took this shelter-in-place opportunity to pursue her second dream: becoming a children's book author. For years, she had the desire to "publish a book that allows a child to feel loved and cared for." It is her dream "to create a book that is so loved, that a child takes it with them everywhere." Through these desires, the 'Shuta and Me' series was born.

The 'Shuta and Me' series is modeled after Emi's beloved late dog, Shuta (pronounced: Shoo-tah). By using Shuta as her model for this series, Emi wanted to represent the idea that those that have a special place in our hearts cannot be replaced. The 'Shuta and Me' series is designed to promote the understanding of emotions, the development of empathy, and the acceptance of others to young children.
