What Katy Did at School
What Katy Did at School depicts the adventures of a twelve-year-old American girl, Katy Carr, and her family who live in the lakeside Ohio town of Burnet in the 1860s. Katy is a tall untidy tomboy, forever getting into scrapes but wishing to be beautiful and beloved. When a terrible accident makes her an invalid, her illness and four-year recovery gradually teach her to be as good and kind as she has always wanted. In this book Susan Coolidge describes boarding school life of Katy and her sister Colver. The fictional Carr family was modeled after her own, with Katy Carr inspired by author herself. The brothers and sisters were modeled on her four younger siblings.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

A girl's journey from sweltering midwestern plains to the freezing east coast suggests cold can spark an intellectual awakeningSarah Crown, Guardian

One of my all-time favourite books . . . It's a wonderful book, very easy to read, even though it was published in the 19th century. It's a very lively funny story

I fell head over heels in love with Katy

Katy speaks with a charm and directness that remains as fresh as when it was written
