What Is a School? - A Philosophical and Practical Guide for Independent School Leaders, Trustees, and Friends
Based on author Peter Gow's lifetime of experience living in, attending, and working in independent schools, WHAT IS A SCHOOL? A Philosophical and Practical Guide for Independent School Leaders, Trustees, and Friends offers school leaders and trustees critical insight into the core characteristics and cultures of successful schools. In deep, sometimes wry "meditations," Gow guides readers in examining the nature of the school as

--an aspiration

--a name

--a utopia

--a social enterprise

--a society unto itself

--an ideal to live for

--a learning experience

--a workplace with products

--a community resource

--an economic entity

--a corporate entity

--an environment

--a laboratory of human experience

--undiscovered possibilities

Gow offers essential reminders of the high ideals and best practices school will need to weather the winds of tremendous, sometimes radical change and adjust their courses to the complex demands, unforeseen challenges, and potential opportunities of an uncertain future.
