Purpose: The book's purpose is primarily to serve as an introductory text on the complex topic of respiratory physiology. The online clinical animations provide a visual aid to help the readers understand the complexities of the respiratory system. The authors have met their stated objectives.
Audience: This book was initially written for medical students and respiratory care students and also as an examination prep review for residents and fellows in pulmonary medicine, critical care, anesthesiology, and internal medicine. Dr. West, MD, PhD, DSc is one of the world's most noted physiologists and researchers; Dr. Luks, MD, MS, a cardiovascular and pulmonary disease specialist - and both are unquestionably experts in their field of expertise.
Features: The text covers all aspects of respiratory physiology: structure and function, blood flow and gas transport, ventilation, diffusion, V/Q relationships, mechanics, stressors, and pulmonary function tests. Each chapter begins with key terms and an introduction followed by the chapter material. The text is easy to read and contains plenty of illustrations to underscore key concepts.
