About the Author

Maria Carluccio earned her BFA from Carnegie Mellon University and her MFA from the Fashion Institute of Technology, with honors. Much like the preschoolers in this book, Maria loves to read and paint, play and stretch. She currently lives in Columbus, Ohio, and teaches illustration at Columbus College of Art and Design.

Prospective preschoolers can jump right into the bright and busy classroom action of this interactive novelty board book, which features a moveable character on each spread that readers can slide along slots cut into the pages. Jaunty rhymes encourage readers to help the protagonists take part in familiar activities in a sunny space brimming with a rainbow of books, toys, and art supplies (“Aren’t you excited/ to make a big mess?/ Making art with our fingers/ is what we like the best”). Carluccio’s digitally rendered collage, marker, and watercolor images of a smiling cast of animals and their rabbit teacher reading, playing, and stretching tall have a scribbly folk-art vibe and serve as a kid-friendly invitation for readers to explore taking their earliest steps toward school. PreS-K—Marker-and-watercolor collage illustrations show a very tall rabbit and a preschooler frog in the cozy surround of a school on the very first day. The small frog encounters others the same size: lion, monkey, pig, kitty, and more; these children are styled in chibilike proportions, while the rabbit adult has elongated limbs. The classroom is flattened and one-dimensional; outside, the sun is smiling as children enter the building. VERDICT Welcome preschoolers, even the downcast kitten. This book is sure to calm "first day" butterflies and demonstrate some of the new things children will encounter, charmingly.

What fun: Exploring a preschool classroom without even being there!

Each spread in this adorable board book contains an embedded groove that gives listeners the opportunity to move a character around a different brightly colored, inviting area of the school. Thus, kids will play while enjoying this book, and they’ll also learn about a preschool environment before they’re actual students themselves. By moving figures around the varied spaces in this school, where the students and teacher are friendly, welcoming, gaily dressed animal characters, children will enjoy a light adventure, gain a safe sense of autonomy, and learn in advance what they will see and do when they join the preschool set officially. The whole joyful experience is described in jaunty, lively rhymes, while the sweet, appealing illustrations, created digitally with markers, collage, and watercolors, depict lively scenes of young animals engaging harmoniously in typical preschool activities. There are cubbies for hanging up outdoor clothing, a tank with two turtles, instruments to play and songs to sing, arts and crafts activities, books to read and storytime, movement games, toys and a kitchen corner to share—and, best of all, new friends to meet and play with.
