We Will Rock You to Sleep: An Introduction to Lullatone is a hybrid disc; it's intended to serve as a single for the song
"A Mobile Over Your Bed" (the first track from the band's 2009 release,
Songs That Spin in Circles), and it's also supposed to serve as a sort of mini-compilation disc that provides an introduction to
Lullatone's work. Seems like a good idea on paper, but in practice it ends up being a little confusing, mostly because it's not clear who this disc is intended for. Dedicated
Lullatone fans will probably appreciate the new serving of sparkly, soporific stuff (
"A Mobile Over Your Head" and
"Kitty Koda Extended Lullabye Remix"), but they'll probably skip over the other six tracks on the disc, all of which have been released on
Lullatone's previous full-length albums. Newcomers, on the other hand, will likely appreciate getting a sampling of
Lullatone's older work, which includes tracks like
"Make This Sound" (a really welcome addition from
Computer Recital) and
"Marching to Sleep" (arguably the weakest track from
The Bedtime Beat). Unfortunately, this disc is so tiny (in spite of being 40 minutes long -- something that can be chalked up to the super-long
"Kitty Koda" remix -- there are only eight tracks here) that it can't really be called an adequate introduction to
Lullatone's discography. In that it offers a couple new tracks and a smattering of
Lullatone's older work,
We Will Rock You does a half-decent job of serving as a single and as a compilation; sadly, it doesn't really do justice to either concept. It would've been nice, for instance, to see a single for
"A Mobile Over Your Bed" that also gathered together remixes and rare tracks (stuff from
Lullatone's various compilation appearances, maybe). It also would've been nice to see a real
Lullatone best-of collection, one that offered some real variety and a sense of how the band has grown over the years. And because it doesn't really do either of these things,
We Will Rock You just feels like a missed opportunity. ~ Margaret Reges
