Gr 2–4—Slim but mighty, these volumes pack a powerful punch by combining the tenets of diversity and citizenship with fundamental facts about U.S. government. While the volumes aimed specifically at our political system are very much introductory, the series works well as a whole by conveying the importance of tolerance, cooperation, and peoples' rights in addition to how responsibility can extend beyond the individual. Bonwill writes in a child-friendly style using a familiar framework. Thought-provoking questions are interspersed throughout the text to encourage dialogue and are accompanied by colorful photographs representing a diverse populace. Historical photographs and reproductions are included as well. Each volume concludes with a "Civics in Action" section spotlighting an applicable historic event as well as a "Civics Checklist" enumerating relevant ideas. VERDICT A great resource for introducing civic responsibility that is easily accessible to young readers—and future voters.
