Overview

Charlie Stancik was born in sage and juniper scrub on lands reclaimed from ancient waters--lands whose first outside settlers were Bohemians seeking the end of the rainbow. Charlie seeks his own Xanadu, feeling he must leave the lake bed to find the life he deserves--the life he needs. His pilgrimage takes him to the shores of Lake Michigan, evolving from homelessness to a position of some wealth and power--evolving from a lost soul to someone who has found his soulmate. This seemingly implausible trajectory had been made possible by the enigmatic Robin McCandless and his obscure and potent company, Delpro. Work with Delpro takes Charlie to the furthest corners of the globe and into the darkest shadows. Charlie becomes a key actor in a drama he scarcely understands--a drama that places him in great jeopardy. Charlie the prodigy walks a fine line with Charlie the criminal--the path ultimately guided not by the elusive Robin McCandless but by Rodney Mills, a government investigator with a long history with Delpro and its sordid acts. In the end, Charlie realizes that love in the present and freedom from the past are the riches he has sought.

John Moehl was born in a sawmill town in eastern Oregon, but moved to the savannahs of Central Africa when he joined the Peace Corps in the early 1970s. For most of the following four decades, he lived and worked in Africa. Since his retirement from the United Nations in 2012, and his return to his native Oregon, he has devoted his time to writing about his experiences and the people he was fortunate enough to know.

What People are Saying About This

From the Publisher

Water Striders is a masterful work. Moehl tells the tale of Charlie Stancik, a small-town western country boy of Bohemian descent, who, like Reba, believed that ‘there was life out there.’ Jumping an eastbound freight train, he starts an adventure with a global impact. Packed with exhaustively researched details while still being a fun read, I totally bought into Charlie’s saga after the first few pages. Water Striders is a must-read.”

—Les Torrans, Research Fishery Biologist, retired

“Moehl weaves a complex web of intrigue and crime. Centered on his protagonist Charlie Stancik, . . . the story follows his career evolving from a naive lad to a seasoned and astute representative of a shadowy international syndicate. Along the way, the reader gets to experience Charlie’s roller coaster ride of love, loss, corruption, and redemption. . . . Water Striders exposes you to a world that is not your own, but to which you can still relate in many ways. And isn’t that what we all want from a novel?”

—Bill Dalrymple, International Consultant and RPCV
