In this live theater recording, set in 1941, Sara returns to the opulent Washington, DC, home of her mother, Fanny, after 17 years in Europe. She is accompanied by husband Kurt and their three children. Kurt, who has been actively fighting fascism, is carrying money to fund antifascist activities. He must return to Europe to attempt to free a jailed antifascist leader, but he is delayed by a blackmail threat made by self-exiled aristocrat Teck de Brancovis, who is also staying in Fanny's home. The play says much about the manners, customs, and prejudices of the times as well as about love, loyalty, and family legacy. This is a top-notch production by a professional theater company recorded in a live performance. VERDICT As good as it gets without attending live theater.—Cliff Glaviano, formerly with Bowling Green State Univ. Libs., OH
