Overview

If you are a frequent rider of Metro or a tourist who has been to the city many times, you might wonder: What is at each Metro stop? Is there anything at each stop that is interesting to see? Is it even worth getting off the train, or is some hidden gem being missed?

This book will answer those questions, and it will also cover the usual tourist attractions, including the museums, monuments and memorials on the National Mall. In fact, the author worked and volunteered for the National Park Service on the National Mall for over six years. This means there are insights concerning the main tourist areas that you probably won't find in another book. However, this book is much more than a tourist book, and sometimes it is less than a tourist book. Readers who are looking for great detail, including the history, architecture and a long narrative about different places, should buy one of the many other tourist books available. What you will get from this book is a brief review of places of interest along the Metro route. This book is also about the culture of Metro and as such the culture of the Washington Metropolitan area (DMV) and, frequently, the nation. This includes culture-war battles in the DC area (DMV) over the names of a county and an airport. It also includes culture-war battles over some monuments and memorials as well as a theater. Finally, the Civil War statue in Old Town Alexandria is discussed. There are also a few stories built in here and there and some insights about current issues in the area. These issues include everything from race relations and gentrification to the name "Redskins" for the Washington football team. Finally, the book describes an adventure. You may be a long-time rider of Metro, but there is still an adventure waiting for you within these pages. I hope you have a great ride.
