Overview

Responding to the new Anthropocene era, this book explores examples experienced by the artist through images and text. Since it is often overwhelming to read about the environmental crisis as a whole, Wake-up Call breaks it down into individual moments with precise wording to explain each image. Some experiences were beautiful and some were not. Each illustrated page and text face each other making it easy to explore one subject at a time. There are four section: Creatures, Earth, Radiation, and Water.

About the Author

Ms. Larson is an award winning artist. Karen is a member of the Pittsburgh Society of Artists. Being chosen for the Art of the State exhibition in Harrisburg was an honor. She has been a guest lecturer and has given creative workshops in printmaking and other media and techniques, with great appreciation from participants. Other authors and groups have used her illustrations for book covers and illustrated pages. As an arts educator, Karen worked at The Carnegie Museum of Art teaching children and adults, as well as teaching at St. Edmund's Academy in Pittsburgh. Her studies in Lucca and Florence, Italy enhanced her formal education at Carlow University and The University of Pittsburgh. As an environmental artist, Karen responds to personal experiences with nature. With a growing number of young people such as Greta Thunberg raising their voices demanding adults help now, Karen responds uniquely with her art and passionate words. Adding her voice in this way is helpful since just facts alone in this fast-changing time of environmental crisis can be numbing and overwhelming. Karen sees the urgency in responding to climate change and presents her views in a simple and concrete manner to help others understand.
