Description: This book details methods that will help managers of volunteers in hospice and palliative care to make the volunteer experience as satisfactory as possible and to retain well-trained volunteers.
Purpose: Volunteering has always been a cornerstone of the end-of-life movement and this book discusses the purpose and effectiveness of volunteers. I asked our organization's volunteer coordinator to read this book and she also felt that the material was well organized and met the objectives of the editors.
Audience: The book is written for the leadership of the organization and the volunteer manager or coordinator in a hospice or palliative care program. It is not written for the volunteers or for the general public. The advisory editor is Derik Doyle, a well-known name in hospice and palliative care. The authors appear very knowledgeable about their subjects.
Features: After some general information about hospice, the book moves into recruitment, selection, retention, and satisfaction of the volunteer experience. Issues related to managing volunteers are addressed, such as how to let a volunteer know they are unsuited for the task at hand. The discussion about educating volunteers throughout their experience, not just at the orientation, is interesting and mirrors our present system, which has retained volunteers for years. The book covers working with adults and children, as well as networking with other groups to accomplish goals. It also includes tools to use or to adapt for individual situations, as well as a helpful glossary. Since this is an international book, not all of the information will be relevant to practice in the U.S., but it is helpful anyway.
Assessment: In my opinion and in the opinion of our volunteer coordinator, this is an excellent book, impressive for its usefulness. As a clinical nurse specialist certified in hospice and palliative nursing and as the education coordinator of our organization, I have been involved in volunteer training and in-services for five years, so I am aware of the situations discussed in this book. This book meets a need in this area of healthcare and may be useful in other areas of healthcare that use volunteers.
