About the Author

Barbara Decker is a science writer specializing in natural history who has witnessed some of the most spectacular volcanic activity to occur in recent years. She has written numerous articles and books about volcanoes and about nature in the National Parks of the USA. Much of the supporting material within this guide is drawn from the professional work of her late husband, Robert Decker, who was a world authority on volcanoes and who for 25 years taught geophysics at Dartmouth College. Subsequently he was Scientist-in-Charge of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory for five years. He studied volcanoes in Indonesia, Iceland, Central and South America, as well as the United States.
