Gr 2�4—The use of an ominous font for chapter headings and scary photos detract from the informative value of this series, resulting in books that strain to be edgy, but instead end up sensationalizing scientific aspects of nature. However, there is credible content that includes scales of measurement, e.g., the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, the Fujita Scale, the Richter Scale, etc., as well as interesting "Xtreme Fact" text boxes, which are scattered throughout the volumes. Accounts of historical occurrences—such as the recent earthquake in Japan, a tsunami in Chile, and floods in North Dakota—are given. Each book includes survival tips. The content is wide-ranging, yet the intense language, e.g., "horrific," "deadly," "terrifying," etc., means this series emphasizes the destructive forces of nature rather than also exploring the science behind these phenomena in a balanced presentation.
