Description: This is the second edition of a book featuring imaging and clinical photographs of common conditions and complications seen in the emergency department.
Purpose: Cases, images, and therapeutic information are combined in a package intended to simulate a clinical encounter.
Audience: Teachers and students of acute inpatient and outpatient medicine are an appropriate audience for this work featuring emergency department practitioners located throughout the United States.
Features: The book details 110 cases reflecting emergency department, outpatient clinic, or inpatient emergent problems. Each case begins with a brief clinical presentation of one or more paragraphs, diagnostic imaging, either radiographic or photographic, and a clinical question related to diagnosis or therapy. Neurologic, traumatic, infectious, and metabolic problems are covered. Particular emphasis is placed on identification of skin conditions. The cases with imaging and questions are presented in the first half of the book, while the second half provides follow-up images, if appropriate, and a summary of diagnostic considerations and clinical therapy answering the question, along with one to five key references. Most references come from primary literature and date to within 10 years of publication. Good quality plain radiographs, CT scans, and photographs are appropriately selected to complement the clinical vignettes. The table of contents is organized by the presenting complaint of the patient rather than specific topics. A brief subject index of four pages provides good access to content.
Assessment: The focus of this book is largely on problems seen in the clinic and the emergency department. Case presentations are effective, but their organization is difficult to understand given the layout of the table of contents. This could be improved if the presentations were organized by topic both in the table of contents and in the book. Image quality, a critical aspect of a work of this type, and succinct but clear presentations, make this book successful.
