Peter Sturmey, Ph.D., is professor of psychology at Queens College and The Graduate Center, City University of New York. He has published more than 200 papers, 50 chapters, and 20 authored and edited books on developmental disabilities, behavior analysis, clinical psychology and evidence-based practice.

Purpose: According to the preface, this book aims "to provide an overview of the broad field of aggression and violence taking a functional approach that acknowledges the evolutionary, cultural, and operant causes of aggression and violence." These are very worthy objectives, and the book meets the stated objectives.
Audience: According to the back cover, the target audience includes "researchers, academics, and upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in forensic psychology, public health, criminology/criminal justice, developmental psychology, psychotherapy/counseling, psychiatry, social work, educational policy and politics, health psychology, nursing, and behavioral therapy/rehabilitation." The author is a credible authority on the subject matter of the book.
Features: The book begins by discussing the difference between violence and aggression. It is difficult to quantify violence and aggression, though police statistics and national databases are traditionally used. In terms of murder, men are both the perpetrators and victims of such crimes, while women are often victimized in domestic relationships. Part II explores the causes of violence and aggression, including genetic factors that interact with environmental variables. Animal studies reveal that primate aggression may be unlike human aggression. Learning (operant conditioning) also plays a key role in the development of violence and aggression. Part III covers assessment and treatment. The goal of assessment is improved treatment outcomes. Cognitive behavioral therapy has been effective in different settings, and aggressive children and adolescents can also benefit from treatment. Violence to staff and other residents occurs frequently in residential facilities, so it is important that staff members learn behavior management techniques and stress management skills.
Assessment: This book is well-written by an expert in the field. It discusses theory, causal factors, assessment, treatment, and prevention. The book will be of great use to clinicians working in jails, prisons, and residential facilities.
