En cette année 1866, une forte angoisse règne sur les océans. Un monstre marin effrayant a été signalé dans diverses mers par plusieurs navires. Une expédition s'organise à bord de la frégate américaine Abraham Lincoln. Elle a notamment à son bord le capitaine Faragutt, le canadien Ned Land, le fameux naturaliste français Aronnax du Muséum de Paris et son fidèle domestique Conseil. Le but de cette expédition est de débarrasser les mers de cette abominable menace.
