Description: This is a complete guide to veterinary hematology with over 800 excellent color photos and illustrations.
Purpose: The purpose is to cover all aspects of veterinary hematology (except for therapy) and to provide a teaching guide for all veterinary audiences (clinicians, residents, students, and technicians). It is also intended to update an earlier work by Harvey (Atlas of Veterinary Hematology: Blood and Bone Marrow of Domestic Animals (Saunders, 2001)), which was in need of updating.
Audience: The book is intended for all veterinary audiences, from students and technicians to residents, general practitioners, and specialists. Although it is appropriate for all of these audiences, some may benefit from it more than others. For example, this is one of the only books out there that teaches erythrocyte and leukocyte morphology. It is also great for hematology physiology, but it may be too detailed for some general practitioners. The author is a diplomate in clinical pathology and a veterinary biochemist who also has written other books about and/or researched a lot of the diseases and physiologic mechanisms presented in this book.
Features: This thorough book covers nearly all aspects of veterinary hematology from erythrocytes and leukocytes to bone marrow and hemostasis, and even relevant immunology topics. It can almost serve as an all-in-one reference for veterinary hematology, as it covers basic to detailed physiology, morphology, and diseases, as well as applicable connections to current human hematology. Unique to this book, as well as one of Harvey's previous hematology books, is the multitude of exceptional color photos showing the various morphologies that can be observed during cytology of the blood and bone marrow. It also has great color illustrations that are easy to understand and contains several case studies and many tables, along with some algorithms.
Assessment: This is a quality book that will be indispensable to anyone interested in veterinary hematology. It will be especially useful for those wanting to improve their cytology skills, as the color photos are excellent teaching tools.

Chapters are divided into sections on erythrocytes, leucocytes and coagulation, rather than being divided according to diagnosis: for example, infectious diseases, neoplastic diseases, intoxications. As a clinician I find the chosen approach more useful as it supports a problemoriented approach to the case management style of learning more than the scholarly approach to learning which starts with the diagnosis and works backwards.
