Em 1959, a revista Life encarregou Ernest Hemingway de fazer a cobertura de um acontecimento extraordinário que ia ter lugar em Espanha, durante esse Verão. Com efeito, estava previsto que aí se defrontassem, na arena, dois dos maiores e mais celebres toureiros de todos os tempos, Antonio Ordonez e Luís Miguel Dominguin.

Para Hemingway, tratava-se de retomar um tema clássico: um campeão lendário que enfrentava um jovem que o vinha desafiar. Hemingway viveu durante alguns meses junto dos dois toureiros e do seu circulo de amizades. E a reportagem que escreveu, muito maior do que aquela que a revista lhe tinha encomendado, acabou por tornar-se neste livro, uma das suas obras-primas e o seu derradeiro grande livro, antes de se suicidar no ano seguinte.

Verão Perigoso completa a serie de livros que Hemingway dedicou a arte do toureio. Os outros dois são O Sol Nasce Sempre (Fiesta) e Death in the Afternoon.

About the Author

Ernest Hemingway did more to change the style of English prose than any other writer of his time. Publication of The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms immediately established Hemingway as one of the greatest literary lights of the twentieth century. His classic novel The Old Man and the Sea won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953. Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. His life and accomplishments are explored in-depth in the PBS documentary film from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, Hemingway. Known for his larger-than-life personality and his passions for bullfighting, fishing, and big-game hunting, he died in Ketchum, Idaho on July 2, 1961.
