Details the role of basic immunology in the regulation of immunity and vaccine design, emphasizing the use of cytokines to improve the dismal-to-date potency of the new generation of vaccines exemplified by subunit vaccines produced through gene cloning and by synthetic peptides mimicking small regions of proteins on the outer coat of viruses. Also considers vaccines designed to improve cytokine production. Among the topics are dendritic cells and cytokine, the development of para-influenza virus and respiratory syncytial virus subunit vaccines, mucosal vaccines, protection against tuberculosis by plasmid DNA, and overcoming regulatory hurdles.
