Description: This book in the Essentials in Ophthalmology series reiterates, briefly, the status quo of ocular inflammation and notes the few advances or areas of future interest. Notably absent are any of the recently approve steroid implants or depot delivery systems (de Juan's screw, etc.) or new systemic immunomodulatory treatments and their costs/risks/side effects. This is an update of a book published in 2005. The intent of the series is to maintain quarterly updates in eight subspecialty areas of ophthalmology, with each area getting an update every two years.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a biennial update for uveitis and ocular immunologic disorders. Although a worthy objective, I do not believe the authors met their goal.
Audience: The book is written for practicing clinical ophthalmologists, and possibly comprehensive rheumatologic physicians. Stephen Foster is a recognized expert in ocular inflammation.
Features: Although the book covers each major category of ocular inflammation, meaningful clinical updates are lacking. The best quality of the book is the stated objective. However, there is little substance in the way of clinical advances in the past two years that make their way into print.
Assessment: Although the book is well organized and handsome in appearance, its lack of substance as a true update limits its utility. There is still a need for a fairly comprehensive review of new treatment options that have come to market in the past 2 to 3 years for chronic ocular inflammatory diseases.
